Firewood Drive for Neighbors
Many of our neighbors lost some or all of their firewood that they had prepared for winter – which is inching closer quickly. This coming Saturday, September 10th from 11:30AM – 1PM, we’re going to START to try and get our neighbors ready for winter by bringing or splitting wood for them. We’re going to assemble at the Brookside Inn in Upper Jay and head over to the first home @ 11:30AM.
Brookside Inn Parking Lot: http://tinyurl.com/3rxulo2
Many need our help – so we won’t be able to get to everyone this Saturday – but we’re going to start. If you are interested in being a part of this, here’s what we need:
1. Pre-split wood makes the most sense. If you can bring pre split wood – even in the trunk of your car – it would be appreciated.
2. Unsplit Wood. Robbie Lincoln was kind enough to lend a wood splitter to our efforts – but we’ll need wood to cut and split.
3. Labor. We’ll need people who are comfortable with a chainsaw or splitter. We’ll also need people to help stage wood and stack split wood.
If you are interested in helping – please contact me in advance so I know what to expect on Saturday. My email address is eric@klotnet.com and my phone numbers is 946-7655.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Upper Jay Flood Relief Committee
Since the Ausable River rose to a record breaking 18.4 feet on August 28th, our community has been responding, neighbors are helping neighbors. This website is the beginning of an effort by several residents from Jay, Upper Jay, and Keene to assist those affected by the flooding in the Town of Jay.
The high waters formed a powerful torrent that ripped apart our roads, redirected our streams, swept away homes, livestock, possessions, memories and livelihoods. Many of our neighbors have lost everything; some will not have essential utilities, walls in their homes, or the ability to prepare food for weeks as they scramble to repair, rebuild, and struggle to find the funds to cover all they have lost. Much remains to be done and winter in the Adirondacks is only a month or two away.
To donors, non-residents and those not affected by the floods: the fiber of our community is threatened - we need your help. We’ll post notices of fundraisers and more here as our site develops. For now…
Donate by sending a check or money order with the notation “UJFR” to:
Town of Jay Irene Relief Fund – P.O. Box 730 – Ausable Forks, NY 12912
To those affected by the flooding, especially in the Upper Jay area as we start up: in response to the closing of the volunteer food and work station at the Brookside Inn yesterday, we are hoping to develop ways to assist with connecting goods and services needs in our community with goods and services donors. Over the next week, we hope to start slowly providing a network for more resources to assist the community at this website.
Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the individuals and organizations giving their time and energy to help us. The Town of Jay is working tirelessly to serve our needs, other local municipalities, county, state and federal resources have also responded. National Guard, state troopers, Red Cross, DEC Spill Response…so many others. And people, from as far away as Vancouver, BC, and from Lake Placid, E’town, Keene, Plattsburg, and from just around the road, making food, shoveling mud, applying bleach, listening to worries, doing whatever they are asked. Thank you.
Stay tuned.
Town of Jay – FEMA Update
Town of Jay Supervisor Randall Douglas announced that F.E.M.A. Officials have arrived at the Town of Jay Community Center. A formal press release from F.E.M.A. will be forthcoming with times of operation. Currently, town officials are preparing the Community Center for a F.E.M.A. Operations Center.
In order to address some concerns expressed to us by victims of the recent flooding, Supervisor Douglas has obtained the following information; F.E.M.A. officials have assured us that it is, in fact, ok to have removed any debris or damaged personal items from your home. They have also requested that you document all damage and damage removal with pictures. If you have purchased replacement furniture, etc. please be sure to save all receipts.
Supervisor Douglas, who is also the Chairman of the Essex County Board of Supervisors, also said that Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Betty Little, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, Assemblywoman Janet Duprey,
D.E.C. Commissioner Joe Martens, Executive Assistant to Governor Cuomo Mark Strebb, Deputy Secretary of State for Local Government Dede Scozzafava, Congressman Bill Owens, Sean McGuire of the Governor’s Office, other members of Governor Cuomo’s Staff, numerous officials from Essex County and Town of Keene Supervisor Bill Ferebee will be meeting at the Town of Jay Community Center at 4:15, where they will then depart along with Town of Jay Officials for a walking tour of the Jersey Section of Au Sable Forks to view the damages and speak to resident victims of Tropical Storm Irene.
